Yakushi-ji Temple 薬師寺 This temple was established by Emperor Tenmu at the Asuka area to pray for a cure for the Empress who later succeeded him to the throne under the name Empress Jito. When the capital was moved to Heijo (presently Nara). it was moved to its present site, in Nishinokyo.Because of frequent ruinous fires, the three-storied East Pagoda is the only original building remaining in the precincts today, and the Golden Hall (in 1976) and the three-storied West Pagoda (in 1981) were reconstructed in the Showa Period.

薬師寺 Yakushi-ji Temple

天武天皇が皇后の病気平癒を願って680(天武8)年に藤原京に創建したことに始まる。平城遷都に伴い、718(養老2)年、現在地に造営された。創建当時の姿を残すのは東塔のみである。1976(昭和51)年に金堂が、1981(昭和56)年には西塔が復元造営され、中門、回廊などの建造物も随時復元造営された。
