Gango-ji Temple 元興寺 Originally a residence hall for monks,the Paradise Chamber was later rebuilt as two buildings-one the main sanctuary and the other the Zen meditation hall.The roofing is called "Gyoki Tile Cover" and is characteristic of the Nara Period.Some of the remaining roof tiles are 1,200 years old.

元興寺極楽堂本堂 Hondo(Main Hall)

元興寺の前身である飛鳥寺は、飛鳥の地に蘇我氏の氏寺(現在の安居院)として造立され、その後、法興寺と改称された。平城遷都にともない、718（養老2)年、元興寺として現在地に新たに造立された。 　天平時代には、南大門・中門をはじめとして九つの門をもつ壮麗な伽藍を誇っていた。平安時代前半までは、南都七大寺の指導的役割を果たしていたが、中期以降は次第に衰退した。 　元興寺極楽坊は、かつての元興寺の僧房の一部で、鎌倉時代に本堂(国宝)と禅室(国宝)に改築された。
