The World Heritage Treaty for the protection of valuable national cultural
and natural assets as World Heritage sites was adopted at the 1972 UNESCO
General Assembly. By October 1995, the treaty had been signed by 143 countries.
In June 1992,Japan became the 126th signatory to the treaty. In 1993 Japan
acuquired World Heritage registration of Himeji-jo Castle,Horyuji-Temple
and its neighboring Buddhist architecture, Yaku-shima Island,and the Shirakami-sanchi
Heights.In 1994 the cultural assets of Kyoto were registered,and in 1995
the steep-roofed houses of Shirakawa-go Village at Mt.Goka was registered.
